Summer Block Party - Healthy Tip of the Day! Grand Prize Giveaway

The Summer Block Party has been a blast but all good things must come to an end. I hope that you utilize the healthy tips that I've provided for you this week and today we are going to finish off the week with a bang. In addition to the Nestle prize pack, today's winner will receive a $100.00 Visa gift card! Read on for more details.

Tip of the Day: Hydrate! The most important drink during the summer (and really in every season) is water. It is so important to prevent hydration by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. When my son and I go to the playground and he is running around in the hot sun, I bring stainless steel canteens filled with water for both of us. As much fun as it is to enjoy the summer sunshine, I want to prevent heat exhaustion and other problems that can arise from lack of hydration.

Summer means not only fruits, but veggies. Grilled veggies are great, but can be a bit of a pain to cook. My tip is to get a stone for your grill. I have a piece of basalt. After you've cooked on it a bit it gets a good seasoning on it. I don't salt, pepper or butter anything I put on there. My favorites are asparagus and zucchini.

I guess you could use a cast iron skillet, but I like the stone because there are no sides to deal with and I can keep the stone right on the grill.

Here's a place with pictures and more info, but I didn't pay nearly that much.

I have a plethora of rare medical disorders and have studied healthy lifestyle tips and changes since I was 29. Those people with neuroendocrine tumors and gastrinomas who eat foods on the Mediterranean diet live longer, according to recent studies. I keep raw veggies prepped to snack on, and when I feel like I "need" a dessert I have chilled Greek Yogurt (plain) to which I add frozen blueberries and then I sprinkle chopped almonds on top -- tastes like mock blueberrry cheesecake.

My healthy tip is to alter your favorite recipes to make them a bit healthier. For example, I just made brownies using vanilla yogurt in place of the egg and the oil. I just made cookies with unsweetened applesauce in place of the oil and replaced the egg with one egg white. Makes it more healthy to dig in on treats! Nearly any baked good can have the oil replaced by applesauce, (unsweetened). Or if you're making a bread, you can use Canned Pumpkin in place of oil! Much less fat.

My healthy tip is to eat more salads. The grocery stores and/or farmers markets seem to have a ton of beautiful fresh fruits and vegtables this time of year that are perfect for making a low-fa meal size salad. Try spinach, mixed greens, grapes, avocados, peaches, asparagus, tomatoes, melons, and strawberries. For some protein, add a little grilled chicken, tuna, beans, chickpeas, nuts, or cheese. Salads are very healthy for you because they are loaded with antioxidants which help to lower your risk for cancer and heart disease. If you put tuna or nuts in your salad then your getting omega-3and omega-6 fatty acids which also help protect against heart disease.

healthy tip:
A lot of people don't like tofu at first. If you freeze tofu and then thaw before using, it loses some water content and tastes more meat-like. A good way to try and fool your meat-eating friends into a healthy alternative.

I have just been learning how important flossing is for heart health...if you aren't into the habit of doing this daily, now is a great time to start!

Include a healthy protein source in every meal. It can be a dairy product, poultry, beans, nuts, tofu, etc . . .

It fills you up and provides fuel for your muscles which keeps your metabolism speeding along.

My tip is to fill a lunch bag with a healthy snack like grapes or wheat cracker, that way you have a healthy snack ready for you. And the reason for the brown bag is to learn portion control...you can't eat any more than the bag can hold.

This may sound weird, but invest in a pill grinder. You can grind your vitamins and supplements and add them to delicious things like shakes and smoothies. They are easier to swallow and absorb better!

My suggestion is to never go grocery shopping when hungry. I find that if I go shopping when hungry I tend to buy ready to eat foods that are unhealthy.
Preparation is key.
Also, when I do shop I load up on foods that are minimally processed to snack on during the day. For example, I will chop red peppers and put them in baggies to eat later, so I am not tempted to graze in the candy jar.

To keep up the theme of healthy cold and frozen treats, I have the simplest way of making banana ice cream -- simply freeze a whole banana and then throw it in a blender to puree it, and voila, you have an instant easy, healthy snack. Of course, you could add some milk or vanilla for extra flavor, but it's just perfect on its own. Thanks!
