Earth Month Giveaway!

April is Earth Month and I have to say that I am very happy that the celebration of the place we call home has gone from one day to an entire month. I think that there is still a ton of education that needs to be done to encourage people to take small steps to make this Earth a better place. If you are thinking that it is too difficult or expense to incorporate "green" living into your life I have a few ways that you can do so simply and economically.

My first suggestion is to stop using plastic bags. Did you know each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide? The use of plastic bags has negative effects on the environment, every year marine animals die from consuming plastic and since plastic is not biodegradable they break down into smaller toxic parts that contaminate soil and roadways. You can read more about the cost of plastic bags on the environment on Reusablebags.com.

To stop contributing to this pollution you can simply start bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store, department store or any other place where you are likely to receive items in a plastic bag when purchased. You can go for basic green bags that most stores actually carry for about $1.00, I have some from Publix and Walmart. But look around your home, you likely have tote bags that you can use for your purchases.

To ensure that I don't leave my bags at home I leave them on the doorknob to my garage and then take them to the car when I am doing shopping. I also leave a couple in the car just in case I have to pick something up and forget to take the bags from home.

Another tip that you can easily incorporate into your life is to use a water filter instead of buying bottled water. You can use a Brita or similar product to filter your water. This will cut down on the plastic bottle waste in the environment. If you sign a pledge to reduce your use of bottled water with Filter For Good you will recieve a $5.00 off coupon for Brita products.

By taking these two easy steps you can cut down on the plastic waste that you contribute to our environment. Thanks to Walmart, all of the ElevenMoms are having a giveaway that will further assist you in your journey to live a greener lifestyle.

The winner will recieve:

One Brita Digital Water Filter valued at :$34.98
One Bissell Little Green Carpet and Upholstry Cleaner : $74.88
Greenworks Cleaners, White Cloud Recycled Toilet paper and Tide Coldwater Detergent

This prize package has an approxate retail value of $130.00

We use reusable bags (I have them stored in my trunk). Our city recently decided to charge a tax, through the stores, of .05 for each plastic bag you use when buying something.

I think I'd use the Brita water filter as we're still in the bottle water stage at home (oops).

The product I look forward to using the most is the One Bissel Little Green Carpet and Upholstry Cleaner! I've been thinking of asking a girlfriend of mine if I could borrow her carpet steam cleaner, but having my own that will also clean upholstry would be great! With four children you can only imagine how much I need this!

As a family we already try to use our reusable bags for groceries. I haven't gotten into the habit of remembering them for other purchases, but I'm going to start doing that. I tear paper napkins in half to get double the usage and I do the same with dryer sheets. I also use used copy paper on both sides. We try to do as much as we can and would also love to have the filter to cut down on the disposable bottle usage! :)

I want the upholstery cleaner becaus both me and my daughter have allergies and it is really difficult to clean dust and stuff of the sofa and chairs.

We only use Natural cleaning products in my house and we recycle most things- reusing shopping bags when we don't have enough canvas bags, not buying bottled water...

The carpet cleaner would be fabulous! I've been eyeing it up for a while now, having a nearly 3 yr. old boy in the house.

We use our own bags at the grocery store, use stainless steel water bottles, try to buy toilet paper and paper towel made out of recycled materials, have a high efficiency washer and dryer and try to hang laundry out to dry on the line in the summer. Those are a few of the things we do to be green...

Our family has been recycling for awhile now and just last month we installed a water saver on our toilet and also a "navy shower" showerhead for our shower. The showerhead allows you to slow the flow of water with the touch of a button while you're soaping up or shaving.

I would love to try the Clorox Greenworks. I use vinegar & baking soda on a lot of things, but sometimes it's just not enough. Thanks, uheeter at comcast.net

We'd like to try the carpet cleaner.

I keep reusable bags in my car right next to me so I remember to bring them into the store with me.

Thanks!

I'd love the One Brita Digital Water Filter because I'd love to quit buying water.

I keep green mainly by being a strict recycler.

I could definitely use the tide detergent most- we spend a fortune on it! We recently switched from paper towels to microfiber cloths (it saves a ton of money too!), we use fluorescent bulbs and make sure to recycle

The Bissell Little Green would be lovely to have! 2 cats, a husband and a baby = lots of cleaning :-)
We recycle, drink Brita water (I use a stainless steel bottle), use canvas totes and grocery store reusable bags instead of plastic, use HE machines and biodegradeable detergent.
If I am lucky enough to win I look forward to using the Brita Digital Water Filter...so I can drink more without hurting the earth by re-filling my own bottle.

We recycle, we use our own totes at the stores, and we carpool when possible.

The vacuum! Ours sucks 'cuz it doesn't suck (hee hee). Our family has been going greener by making a recycling bin out of our 2nd bathtub. Then once a month we take everything down.

I would love the Bissell Little Green Carpet and Upholstry Cleaner!

To be green, we are unplugging our cellphone and laptop chargers when not in use.

I am most looking forward to both the Bissell and the Brita. My DH won't crack and buy a water filtration system that we so desperately need and I have a 13 month old and 2 dogs......thats a vacuuming nightmare!

Thanks!

My former answer was incomplete.

My favorite would be the Little Green machine.

We watch our energy use, use CFL bulbs, recycle what we can, use cold water for laundry, and reuse paper when possible.
