Crossing The Finish Line #LLSTNT

Running the Nike Women's Half-marathon with Team in Training

On October 17, 2010 I crossed the finish line of the Nike Women’s Half-Marathon in San Francisco. My very first time running 13.1 miles of blood (not literally but figuratively people), sweat and tears after a countless number of training miles. During the race, I was supported by cheers from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training crew, without whom I would never have been able to cross the finish line.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission is cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since the organization’s inception in 1954, LLS has invested almost $1 billion to living in a world without blood cancer. Team In Training (TNT) is the flagship fundraising campaign of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the world’s largest and most successful charity sports endurance training program. This is the 25th anniversary of TNT and to date,  has trained more than 570,000 people and helped LLS invest more than $875 million in research to discover and deliver breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today.

After losing 50 pounds I decided to train for an endurance event to challenge myself physically and I also wanted to make a difference in the lives of others so I joined TNT. With a goal of raising $3900 I forged ahead and ultimately raised over $5000 and was one of the top fundraisers for the Nike Women’s Half-Marathon in the nation.

TNT provided me with top coaches, expert training clinics ranging from nutrition to shoe choice. And most importantly, the team approach to training. I looked forward to my Saturday morning runs with the Team as we tackled each new mile together.

TNT has over 200 events annually including marathon and half-marathons, triathlons, cycling, and hiking events. There is something for everyone! In exchange for raising funds, they receive four to five months of personalized training by TNT-certified professional coaches. The overall goal is for everyone to cross the finish line and with the training received it can be done!

I am a huge supporter of TNT and have done multiple events with them, served as a mentor and participated on my local alumni advisory board. I love that once you complete an event you are always part of the family and even if you aren’t fundraising, as a alum you can train with the team on group runs.

The Leukemia Lymphoma Society and Team in Training want to inspire you to run, walk, cycle or hike and they are providing one of my readers with a bag full of goodies!

I enjoyed this article because it shows that with a goal in mind, great planning & support how fun and enjoyable physical activity really is! That being said, I would like to train for the 16th Annual Key West Half Marathon and 5K on January 19, 2014. My sister and her family live there and I would love the opportunity to run a race in their city as well as spend quality time with family. Absolutely a win-win!
