A Funny Thing Happened....

on the way to the potty. Actually the involvement of the potty is secondary to the true nature of this tale. Last night I was watching "Go Diego Go" with Mekhi and let him know it was time to get ready for bed. When he turned around to face me I was slightly surprised by the view, his penis was in his hand and he said "pee pee Mommy." Now, as the mother of a boy I am not surprised to see him playing with his penis, I know that is absolutely normal. However, he has never removed it from his pants on his own. I briefly had visions of my son pulling out his member during daycare but quickly dismissed the thought because I assume (and hope) that he just felt comfortable enough at home to do this.* Or perhaps this is the first sign that he is indeed ready for potty training. We have been doing prep after all, watching videos, singing the potty song, etc.

We proceeded to the potty and he sat there for a good five minutes with penis in hand looking at the ready to go potty. I sat there encouraging him by saying "ready to go potty?" to which he responded "um hmm." Perphaps after my third time asking I began to get on his nerves because he everytime I started to talk he'd say "ssshhhhh." So I asked him "What is it Mekhi?" and he said snake. In my mind I am scratching my head because I can't believe my 2 year old is now referring to his penis as a snake. For clarification I asked him where? and he pointed outside of the bathroom. Okay. Good. Now. Back to my interrogation "ready to go potty?' this time he put his finger up to his mouth and shushed me. When I tried to speak again he shushed me while wagging his finger no.

I about died laughing. I couldn't get upset at him because he was simply imitating me. It was hilarious! As I replayed the entire scene over in my mind from penis out to shushing I had a long laugh about it and realize with a toddler I will never want for entertainment!

*Side note - Today I dressed him in coveralls. Just. In. Case. One can never be too cautious! LOL

Oh good grief! Seriously, this is what I have to look forward to? Did you ever find out what in the world was going on?
Was Diego still on? Maybe there was a snake on TV. All I have is an image in my head of a two year old Al Bundy. Sitting on the sofa, watching a little Noggin, snake in hand! LOL!!!
What a cute story, tanks for sharing. I'll be sure to return the favor in a few months ;)

Ha! Hilarious! During potty training, J shushed us too. We think she wanted to hear the tinkling sound. We started using it to our advantage - whenever she would be silly & distracted on the potty, we would dramatically/excitedly say, "Shhhhh! I think I hear the pee-pee coming!" and she would settle down and go! Now, a "shhhhh!" practically triggers her to pee, so if we're in a hurry we can sit her down, say, "Shhhhhh!" and she goes right away.

P.S. Good call on the coveralls! {wink!}

Also, just a guess, but maybe when he said, "shhhh!" and you asked what, that "ssssss" SOUND made him think of a snake. Who knows. Hilarious though.

I have one boy that is fascinated with his penis. He'll take it out when we are at home, but luckily, he's never done it in public or at daycare. The other two couldn't really care less.

HYSTERICAL! This is just what I needed on such a dreary day. I am so glad I have a girl. LOL

My son just turned 5 and I still worry about the day he will proudly display his penis to others. He has long blond curly hair and is mistaken as a girl many times. He'll clarify but I dread the day when some parent argues with him and he pulls 'it' out to prove his point :-)

Haha! Already getting schooled in the art of distraction. He just has to work on his technique. Something more believable than a snake. Like a pile of chocolate. Yeah, I'd drop everything for a pile of chocolate!

See now with 2 little girls I can't even imagine your situation. Yes they sit with feet astride and sometimes lift their dress but for the most part they hate being uncovered.
Ah yes. The joys of raising a boy. Of course you know this is only the beginning. He has officially discovered a new friend. Get ready, girl. Overalls...good idea.

LOL ok that made me do two things 1.)Laugh I almost needed to go to the ready to go potty. 2.) Scared about Boston going through the penis in hand(possibly in public) phase!
My son isn't at the potty training stage yet, though he does say "potty" whenever anyone else goes. I think its because we have his older sister around. My daughter shh's me sometimes when she's in the bathroom so we can hear her tinkling.

Love this story, especially the part about putting coveralls on him.

I know what this feels like with a boy. Currently, Mariah is potty training. She has me going to the bathroom every minute. She doesn't even like me to be in the bathroom with her.

This is so funny! Good luck with the training.

You literally brought tears to my eyes with this story! You also made me incredibly happy that I have a girl, and that my stepsons are way past the potty training stage :)

As funny as that is, I'm still dreading potty training. And also a little bit glad that I have a girl. No snakes to worry about! :)

I remember the day my son finally went to the potty standing up and I cried. It took almost a good year for it to finally "take" but when it did it was glorious. My 2 year old daughter the other day informed me that scissors cut her butt and when I asked her "Where?" she proceeded to point to her vagina and say "There mama, it cut my butt right there!" with the most concerned and sad look on her face....I am STILL laughing about it.

My best, Lynn

My boys still haven't outgrown the fascination with their penises ... i'm not sure they ever do!
This is just too funny. I have a 10 month old boy who I have recently noticed grabs at his penis when I change his pamper. I guess I need to be ready for all types of surprises.
Holding the penis is normal for a baby boy huh???? I got my ultrasound and there he was holding his penis. I had to move around a bit to get him to take his hand down, so we could see that he was indeed a boy. Hmmm.
cute story it took my son forever an a day to go potty im so glad that stage is over with. He still sleeps with me occacionally. That I dont mind lol. My daughter been independant since she got here ha!

Ha! Good job mama. I have to say that I love, love, love your views and approach to "at-home" penis play, lol. Mommy Renee gets a gold star!! My Human Sexuality professor would be so proud of you, hahaha.

And, did you say there was a snake outside the window??? There are snakes in Atlanta??? If you couldn't tell, I'm not a fan of snakes ::types with one hand and bites nails off the other::
