A Lesson In The Importance Of Childproofing

Perhaps the more appropriate title of this post is "why I should not keep water or other beverages bedside if I am not going to finish them."
This morning my son came in to greet me in his special way. He knocked on my partially open door and proceeded to bust it open while pushing his train. He came to my bedside, asked " what you doing mommy?" and got in the bed with me. He sweetly asked for a hug, got down and went on his merry way. I looked in the other direction for (I swear) one moment and when I glanced at him he was drinking water from the glass on the side of my bed.

Here is the thing, the water in the glass was a couple of days old. I have a habit of bringing a glass of water up with me before I retire with the intent of getting one last glass in. If I don't finish my water I refuse to drink it in the morning. Most times I will take the glass to the kitchen but there are times that it just doesn't make it downstairs. So imagine my surprise and chagrin when my son was trying to drink 2 day old water! I am pretty sure I caught him in time but when I tried to explain to him not to drink things my husband called out "that will never work, he will always drink or eat random things. That is why they childproof!" Great point dear husband.

But the kicker in all of this? My husband asked "What did he drink? Wine?" Now that is funny. Because although I may not finish my water up at night, if I have the occasional glass of wine you will be hard pressed to find any leftovers in a glass around here!

If it helps any, I think people around here drank worse than that when they were 2.

My son is always picking up cups and drinking out of them. We have to be vigilant about moving cups out of his reach.

I guess I must be bad mommy because my son has ingested far worse than two day old water.

Still, knowing you, I can see how this would be upsetting. Good thing no wine is wasted there :) Your husband does have a sense of humor. Unwittingly so perhaps..

Lol at your husband suggesting that you'd let wine go undrunk. Hey, is "undrunk" not a word?!

"God made dirt, so dirt can't hurt!" Okay, that's really not true but, if this is as bad as it gets, you're doing very well my dear. Shoot, I have sucked down two-day old water just so I don't have to fully wake to go get a fresh glass at 3am. He'll be just fine but a word to the wise: if this freaked you out, don't ever ask Mekhi what he ATE on the playground today. I learned some scary things from my two year old that way!

Oh yes! LOL! There would never be any leftover wine for him to drink at MY house, either!

Yeah, really! Who leaves wine leftover!? LOL I never childproofed a THING. I figured they had to learn "no, not yours, don't touch, don't do that..." LOL

I do the same thing Renee... I bring a cup up every night and never drink it. My water gets knocked over, poured into carpet and plants (baby boy likes to be helpful) most mornings so it never lasts two days.

Mekhi will be fine - stale water will build a strong immunity to our public water system... ;)

Two day old water?! I'd say for a toddler he's ahead of the game just drinking water without prompting!

OMG. I do that too, last week my 10 month old pulled the glass down and of course it fell all over him and on the carpet. I'm glad it was water and not wine. Sigh.

A glass of wine sounds really good right about now!

With two cats and a toddler, I don't leave glasses of anything sitting around. I have to confess, though, that two day old water doesn't bother me that much. I've probably drank some of it myself from time to time.
Ack! Thank goodness it was just water!
ha ha! Well I'll take this one as a heads up for the future William slip ups. Good thing for us too, if it was wine or another variety of adult beverage there would be none left anyway! Great post :)

lol @ last paragraph. good thing it *was* just water!

i guess youngsters don't really have the concept yet of something shouldn't be eaten or drank after a certain point. they use their taste buds to judge!

I find myself doing that with juice... I always have to catch Miss J beside my bed, right before she tips the glass of day old orange juice!

I've actually done that a lot while I was pregnant w/DS2--I'd always bring a glass of water to bed w/me and I'd often leave it for more than 2 days (I'd end up w/lots of glasses of water).

True, there are worse things that he could've gotten his hands on, but we just gotta try and keep an eye out for our little ones as much as possible.

And if they do drink 2 day old water, well, hopefully it'll just help them get a stronger stomach =).
