A Lesson Learned and Happiness too!

And what was the lesson? Never think a toddler is mature enough to understand the concept of delayed gratification. Especially when he is hungry. And the delayed gratification involves a cookie.

Here is the story. Yesterday on Twitter I was talking about my lack of holiday spirit. Yes, Mekhi and I have our holiday hats on but as of Monday afternoon Mommy hadn't decorated or purchased a gift. Not one. Single. Gift. Jyl of Mommy Gossip - Girl's Night Out (on twitter) mentioned I should make some holiday cookies and as a Random Act of Kindness hand them out. Holiday cheer for everyone! Here are her cookies.
Cute right? So, I decided that Mekhi and I were going to make these cookies and hand them out at school. Well, silly me. I thought it would be a good idea to do this project before dinner because after dinner plans included trimming the tree and singing (okay, no singing but Mekhi did dance). I mentioned the magic word "cookie" and Mekhi abandoned his first love Dora to join me in baking. He carefully placed M&Ms and cheerfully ate cookie dough. When the first batch was ready for the oven I told him he could have one after dinner. Dinner was served and my son refused to eat. No pushing or prodding changed his mind. Finally, he relented (when I served him a 2nd meal) and ate. Crisis averted. Or so I thought.

Today I will be explaining that despite what these look like:

These misshapen cookies are indeed reindeer and NOT Aliens. I hope I don't scare the children.

This holiday season why not take the challenge? Perform a random act of kindness and spread some holiday cheer. Do you have any ideas for random acts of kindness?

Okay Renee, I'm stealing the cookie idea! I think they turned out awesome and I enjoyed your cute story.. I know the kids at school loved them and did not mistake them for aliens! A random act of kindness for me is I like to remember people that usually can slip through the cracks like the school crossing guard. I always present him with homemade goodies in mid-traffic! He is always so stunned by it! Makes me so happy to do something so random for someone who would have no clue who I was if they saw me on the street.

Okay, how CUTIE are these cookies? They don't look like aliens at all! You have a recipe?!

Hmmm, my random act of kindess? Handing over my Secret Santa gift to a class at donate.org. I mean, I don't need another bottle of perfume or a scarf or gloves. But the class looking for books about African American heroes has needs. So that's my random act of kindness. (But there will be plenty more!)

Hahahhaa..aliens. I love it. I'm guilty of cookie abuse, I fear. If my guy won't start eating..sometimes I give him a couple Teddy Grahams or something..just to get him STARTED. Then he usually eats his REAL food. Hey, whatever works at this age, right?

I have to admit, those reindeer cookies in the second photo look a bit like the ones the kids and I made a year (maybe two!?!) ago Perhaps a few of ours were cross eyed. But they do taste good, you have to admit. As to delayed gratification - hmmm... what excuse does a 36 year old get to use?

HAHA. I think you're good. They DON'T look like Aliens. I have been thinking about possible random acts of kindness since reading about the challenge on another blog... I'll let you know what I come up with.

They're cute. Come on , it isn't all point for perfection. And as far as the cookies before dinner go, i can never do that at our house. My younger son would live on cookies and chocolate given even half a chance.

o.k.

i just cracked up at the alien comment. ha ha!

they're cute and i'm sure they're quite tasty as well. and what a great concept..holiday cheer for all!

*suddenly craving cookie dough*

regarding dora...that character must have some kind of hypnotic hold on young children cause every single child i know, male or female, LOVES that show. shoot, i like it myself, lol!

Love this post! I never knew my cookie tweet would generate such interest. When I went to bed last night, over 250 people had viewed the pic. They were asking for instructions, so I posted them on http://ad.vu/bhu4 in the comments section. It was craziness. My MIL deserves all the credit :).

But, before I say Merry Christmas and sign off, you gotta know how cute your cookies turned out! They are awesome. The kids will love them. And, any RAK brings us joy, right? Spreading holiday cheer always makes the season more jolly for me. So, I'm sure you're feeling the benefit of that. And, your son has an awesome example of a mom that serves! Yeah!!!

Happy Holidays!

Anyway... such a fun post!

Those cookies look like fun! I'm going to a mom's group meeting on Friday, I think I'll attempt them for that. I'll have to think about the random act of kindness...

I think the cookies came out great. All the kids care about is the "cookie" part. My daughter has been bugging me about making the Crayon cookies we made a couple of months ago. They took forever so I may try this recipe instead. As for my random act of kindness, hmm?

Happy Holidays.

Those cookies are so cute and a really great idea. My random act of kindness was to make a CD of my favorite Christmas songs and hand them out to some other moms I know in my area.
