Yo Gabba Gabba!

I love Yo Gabba Gabba. It is one of those shows that you either really love or really hate. The first time I saw the crazy looking creatures and the even crazier looking DJ Lance I thought "what is this mess?” But I started listening to what they were saying and realized that this show is pure genius.

The premise of the show is DJ Lance ‘animates” characters and when they come to life they teach through music and song. From the Nick Jr. website:

“Yo Gabba Gabba! is a fun live-action program for young children ages 1 and up. Join our host DJ Lance Rock as he introduces us to friendly toy monsters in a magical land full of music, dance, colorful cartoons, and simple life lessons that will get you and your children up off the floor to learn and dance along. Just say the magic words! YO GABBA GABBA!!”
The music and mini vignettes are excellent. Truthfully, the music is beyond wonderful. One song that is never far from my mind is the Wiggle song, officially titled "Hold Still." We all know that preschool age children can be wiggly from time to time. Well, the Wiggle song lets them get all of the wiggles out and is extremely catchy. I have been singing the Wiggle song ever since we started watching Noggin.

Another thing that is outstanding about the series is the use of current musicians for the music. In addition to the show, there are “videos” that are shown on Noggin. My favorite so far is the Lovely,Love My Family song (click the link it is worth a listen) by The Roots . The words are really catchy and in classic Roots style will have your toes tapping. It just doesn’t get better than that. My child learns great songs by some of my favorite artists. I get to listen too. A double bonus!

If you have a preschool age child I highly recommend Yo Gabba Gabba. Once you get past the psychedelic dress of DJ Lance and the trippy looking friendly monsters, you will be pleasantly surprised.

I totally agree with you on this one. My toddler son loves this show. It's gotten him to eat avocados, carrots, and has taught him to "keep his hands to himself" when playing with other children. I'm totally a Yo Gabba Gabba fan! Right on mom!

My best friends little girls LOVELOVELOVE this show ... I mean have you ever seen a 18 MO and a 2.5 YO sit there, still, quiet and totally enthralled for 30+ minutes?

Nor have I until my friend turned on Yo Gabba Gabba ... she made a believer out of me.

I am not sue the Peanut is ready for that type of commitment ... will wean her off Sesame Street slowly. I mean, if she could, that child would inject Elmo directly into her veins.

My kids are obsessed with this show, especially the 18 month old, MY GOD. It almost makes me wonder, are there subliminal msgs? LOL

I really need to be more open to Children's Programming. I happened to catch a glimpse of that show and IMMEDIATELY said no. Apparently, that was the wrong reaction. :)

I am SO out of the loop. The last show I remember my kids really loving was Barney. Oh, and SpongeBob! However, when the kids were little, I knew every character, every song, and every show that was fun.
You sure do have to look past all the odd freaky characters to appreciate this show. William LOVES it!

I'm really trying to love this show. Really, really, really! My 3 yo son LOVES it, so eventually I know it'll grow on me. Reading your post puts it in a different perspective though; thanks.

So I spelled something wrong and it bothered me. *delete* LOL What I said WAS...my 4 year old likes this cartoon, I knew this. What I learned this weekend was that even my hubs and 10 year old were singing and dancing along to it! It was funny stuff.

My toddler loves it but I hate it.
After 10 years of watching kids show...I need acid to remove all the memories! LOL!!!

I am SO GLAD that mine are older and I'm past this pahse in their lives... with James it was Barney, with Jaden it was sadly, spongebob. But spongebob rocks!

Do you find yourself flipping thru the channels and stopping on these shows for far too long before you even realize that are no children in the room?!

totally guilty here.

We love this show!!! I think you nailed it on the head...either you LOVE this show or you don't. And the "Hold Still" song..forget about it!! My 13 month old does not hold still, but he loves to dance to that song as well as the opening song.
I am totally loving that my 4 year old knows who Biz Markie is and what it means to " beat box" :)

I've tried but just can't get into it! I miss Noggin videos though since the boys mostly watch Nick now.

My niece loves this show, but I cannot stand it. I have tried to get my son into it but he hasn't caught on yet, maybe when he's older.

As much as I dislike this show, I would rather he get into Yo Gabba Gabba than Barney!

I was thinking of writing up something on this myself. This show both mystifies and terrifies me. It's trippy for sure, and gives me scary college flashbacks lol but I love how whenever it comes on, it puts my kids in a trance so I can cook dinner. Good post!
Okay, maybe you and my Lila saw something that I just didn't see, but I truly didn't get this show when I caught it a few months ago... I couldn't get past the DJ. He was a teeny bit scary. But anyone who incorporates songs by The Roots deserves a second chance. Maybe I'll have a glass of wine while I watch... that'll liven things up! LOL!

You should see my boys get down to Hold Still... I should record them sometime.

This show ROCKS!

I mean who doesn't love the song about eating healthy snacks.... "There's a party in my tummy, so yummy, so yummy".

You've gotta love this show ladies. People think Im crazy when I'm in the grocery store trying to get the kids to pick up healthy snacks and there I go singing this tune... LOL

My Olivia and I are definitely "Yo, Gabba Gabba" fans. Hubby hates it *lol*. It's a great show, with great music. I also recently posted about another favorite, "The Backyardigans", on my blog. We love the "Boinga" song with Alicia Keys :-).

I have to say, I'm not a fan of Yo, Gabba Gabba. In fact, I would rush to turn the TV every time it came on. Something about it just creeped me out. But after reading this, I think maybe I just didn't give the show a fair chance. Oh well...now that we no longer have cable, the only thing mini me is watching is Arthur and whatever else shows on PBS kids :)

My 2 year old loves Yo Gabba Gabba! Although we cut back on the cable so she's missing it a little. The songs they sing always seem to put her in a trance!

I have never heard of this, but I am all for getting the wiggles out!

the first time I saw it- it just seemed like Eye Candy with no substance. then it stuck with me, and ALL 3 of my kids were glued.

i don't know what it is- but they love it.
Darn it! I am officially without a baby because I don't know what you are talking about. When I asked my 7 year old about it she said "it's a baby show, but I like it." Enjoy the baby years because they really, really fly by.

We are big fans here, truly. I know some people find it bizarre, but the music is actually good, not just the usual repetitive sing songs. The messages are simple but important. My two year old has loved it since infancy and even my teen sports Yo Gabba Gabba pictures on her books and binders. DJ Lance rocks, tis true. ;-) I sound like a commercial for YGG.

Unfortunately we don't get Noggin =(. This show looks like fun though. Isn't it funny how those songs stick with you? =)

It has grown on me. When I first saw it I was kind of shocked and amazed, but it is a cute show. The lessons are great and I love how there are all these different celebrities appearing and making fools of themselves. LOL

We don't watch television- either cable or regular. We do some children's dvds. I have seen this show however when we stay in hotels or go on family vacations. I kind of like it and it also kind of freaks me out... but most preschool shows do.

I mean I LOVE Mr. Rogers- but there are days like when he straps on his speedos and swims or something equally weird and I am like Oh man that guy is a FREAK!

My one year old loves this show. He will sit so intently and watch like he really knows what is going on. We run the On Demand episodes over and over for him and he watches it the 20th time like it's his 1st time.

It was great meeting you yesterday!

Coincidentally, I tweeted about how much we love Yo Gabba Gabba yesterday. Our whole family now sings the "I Like Bugs" song and also the "Don't Bite Your Friends" song.

We watch this show every day about 1000 times a day!

My youngest is 9 so she doesn't know about this show, but I read about it somewhere and I have to admit that I actually watched this one day when I was home alone. (Don't tell!) It was weird but the music was so good!

My son loves this show!! At first I thought it was some crazy Hong Kong thing until I got a good look and realized that it was DJ Lance Rock. I called my sister who confirmed that it is all the rage in the US too.

This show has taught my son to keep trying, share, and of course to sing "there's a party in my tummy" at every meal. He trys to beat box like Biz but that just confuses most people here in Asia.

There is something wonderful about hearing a 3 year old sing "Don't give up, don't give up, keep trying..." that just warms my heart. I was turned off by DJ Lance's snug costume but now, it's dance-y time for the whole family.

I tried to get my SO to dress up as DJ Lance for Halloween.

It didn't work.
