Wordful Wednesday

One of the milestones in every family is the first birthday of a new baby. As Mekhi's birthday approached I asked my friends with children how they celebrated this milestone. The answers varied from a full party for thirty to small intimate gatherings. I also read articles on several parenting sites for suggestions. From the "professional" perspective you should double a child's age and invite that number of children to the party.

I was caught somewhere in the middle. I wanted to honor this day-my husband and I made it through the first year and a celebration was called for. I also recognized that spending a great deal of money on something my son would not remember was not the most practical thing to do. I settled on a very small party - attend by my mother, husband and Mekhi.

And I planned as if a cast of thousands would attend - okay, I am exaggerating butI did run around buying party goods and gifts. And the day was wonderful. The evidence is right here.

happy birthday Mekhi! :)
Wow, Renee. You are all over the bloggosphere. Congrats. Sounds like Mekhi's party was perfect. I did big parties for my oldest and my youngest, and they were all for me....My babies that had just a family party liked them better. :)

Well you posh little mama you!
I'll go check it out; if YOU'RE there, it's gotta be happenin"!

I agree that a small intimate party is best at this age. They get overwhelmed with big ta do's and stress is not what they need on their special day. What a cute little outfit he's wearing. I'm glad it was special and your mom could be there.

My oldest is 6 and we still do the small get together with immediate relatives. I'm not looking forward to the invite-everyone-from-school shindigs that are soon approaching!

Congrats on the new gig and it looks like Mekhi had a great 1st birthday. I think it means a lot to small children to be surrounded by their favorite people who are fussing all over them on their special day =)

I went big on all 3 first b-days. I made a small clip (30 secs.) of the latest 1st party, it's a pretty good summary of how most 1st birthdays go.

How cute! Everyone is different--I know some parents do go all out and spend hundreds, even thousands, whereas others like just close family and friends around. For DS we had a rather party for about 200 (typical in Hawaii), but for the next baby I know I want it a lot smaller. Too much work =)

And that was the perfect party you threw--just the three of you. What matters is not how many people were there or how much you spent, just that he was with people who love him!

If you don't have a ton of money to blow, then small parties are PERFECT. We had a big family BBQ, and even that was overdoing it, and we havne't repeated our mistake. Your son is going to love seeing those pictures when he gets older!
happy bday little guy! and he is more than happy...good work momma!

Happy Birthday little Mekhi!! Totally presh!

I totally agree, and glad I found someone that shares the same ideas that I have about birthdays. We did something small for ours to this year, because honestly we just couldn't afford much more. Sounds like his day was perfect!

And thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting! :)

That sounds like the perfect party to me! As we approach our daughter's first birthday, we're torn between a big get together with all of our friends and just a small party with family. I think we're leaning towards the latter, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. He is SUCH a cutie!

The first bday was a hard decision for us too. We went with just family and one 1 year old friend. I was perfect!

I am a fan of the small family party for one year birthdays. I actually think that gives THEM more attention whereas when there is a big party with lots of other kids, it is less about them and more about socializing.
Happy Birthday to adorable Mekhi!

Cute pic. Love that you kept it small but how did you say...planned as if a cast of thousands...

He's sweet.

Happy Birthday, Mekhi!

I think you did a great job with the party. I've never been much of a "let's invite the world and spend all our money on a party" person. I think birthdays are meant to be celebrated by those who are most involved in your life, those who appreciate your growth and development. We live in a place where every Spendy McSpenderson has some over-the-top party that simply can't be beat and my son has actually started to decline those invitations...on his own! "Mom, they don't even seem to like any of their presents or have time to talk to anyone there."

Family, when they're around, is best. Otherwise, a couple of close friends, love, and a little cake is all you need.
