Earth Month Giveaway!
April is Earth Month and I have to say that I am very happy that the celebration of the place we call home has gone from one day to an entire month. I think that there is still a ton of education that needs to be done to encourage people to take small steps to make this Earth a better place. If you are thinking that it is too difficult or expense to incorporate "green" living into your life I have a few ways that you can do so simply and economically.
My first suggestion is to stop using plastic bags. Did you know each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide? The use of plastic bags has negative effects on the environment, every year marine animals die from consuming plastic and since plastic is not biodegradable they break down into smaller toxic parts that contaminate soil and roadways. You can read more about the cost of plastic bags on the environment on Reusablebags.com.
To stop contributing to this pollution you can simply start bringing your own reusable bags to the grocery store, department store or any other place where you are likely to receive items in a plastic bag when purchased. You can go for basic green bags that most stores actually carry for about $1.00, I have some from Publix and Walmart. But look around your home, you likely have tote bags that you can use for your purchases.
To ensure that I don't leave my bags at home I leave them on the doorknob to my garage and then take them to the car when I am doing shopping. I also leave a couple in the car just in case I have to pick something up and forget to take the bags from home.
Another tip that you can easily incorporate into your life is to use a water filter instead of buying bottled water. You can use a Brita or similar product to filter your water. This will cut down on the plastic bottle waste in the environment. If you sign a pledge to reduce your use of bottled water with Filter For Good you will recieve a $5.00 off coupon for Brita products.
By taking these two easy steps you can cut down on the plastic waste that you contribute to our environment. Thanks to Walmart, all of the ElevenMoms are having a giveaway that will further assist you in your journey to live a greener lifestyle.
The winner will recieve:
One Brita Digital Water Filter valued at :$34.98
One Bissell Little Green Carpet and Upholstry Cleaner : $74.88
Greenworks Cleaners, White Cloud Recycled Toilet paper and Tide Coldwater Detergent
This prize package has an approxate retail value of $130.00
Leave a comment telling me which of these products you look forward to using most AND how your family is working on being green. Please answer both parts of the question in your response.

I think I'd use the Brita water filter as we're still in the bottle water stage at home (oops).
Cheers,

My family and I have a contest to see who can come up with something to do with our recycles...or collecting the most in what they use.

My family is going more green by using microfiber cloths to clean and using cloths totes to shop. Plus we buy local organic foods, turn off lights in every room and keep it mellow when the toilet is yellow.

As a family we already try to use our reusable bags for groceries. I haven't gotten into the habit of remembering them for other purchases, but I'm going to start doing that. I tear paper napkins in half to get double the usage and I do the same with dryer sheets. I also use used copy paper on both sides. We try to do as much as we can and would also love to have the filter to cut down on the disposable bottle usage! :)
To be green, my family and I recycle, cloth diaper, use cloth bags, and compost.
We only use Natural cleaning products in my house and we recycle most things- reusing shopping bags when we don't have enough canvas bags, not buying bottled water...

We use our own bags at the grocery store, use stainless steel water bottles, try to buy toilet paper and paper towel made out of recycled materials, have a high efficiency washer and dryer and try to hang laundry out to dry on the line in the summer. Those are a few of the things we do to be green...
melacan at hotmail dot com
I would use this for little spills on the carpet or couch or chair.. and even in my car or on car mats!
This is one fine Gift!
I am Trying so hard to become GREENER by NOT buying bottled water. I got a cute water bottle that I refill and carry with me. I am a HUGE water drinker, so this is HUGE. I do NOT want to contribute to all those bottles in our landfills.
We are recycling
Buying Green Cleaning product and making our own, like vinegar and Newspaper to wash windows!
WAlking instead of driving
And buying products with Less packaging!

We are going more green by using resuable grocery bags.
Our family recycles, composts and using cloth grocery bags. Nothing earth shaking, but every little bit helps!

We use vinegar to clean just about everything - so cheap, green, and safe!
and it teaches the whole family about the worth of "recycling" which is the best way to take care of the Earth, and our children PARTICIPATE!
The Bissell Carpet Cleaner would be like magic for us!

But a simple rule we live by is the one cup rule. You get one cup a day, just give it a quick rinse before each drink. It saves tons of dishwasher room!

We're doing all we can to go green, using cloth diapers, owning one car, recycling, using reusable bags.

I would love to try out that carpet and upholstery cleaner!
We recycle, buy local produce & veggies, turn of lights whenever possible & run our fans instead of heat/a/c
In my family, we recycle bottles and cans. We also use only cloth diapers, wipes, etc. No paper towels in my house! :-)
pw0105(at)gmail(dot)com
Our family continues to recycle additional household products on a regular basis and make our own mulch :)
I'm trying harder to reuse things as much as possible before I recycle or discard them. Elastic bands on produce, yogurt cups, bread bags, etc.
I have been buying more green products and buying more local produce.

We try to stay green by biking or walking whenever we can, instead of driving. I even shop for groceries by bike.

Our family has been recycling for awhile now and just last month we installed a water saver on our toilet and also a "navy shower" showerhead for our shower. The showerhead allows you to slow the flow of water with the touch of a button while you're soaping up or shaving.

My family does several "green" things to help keep our planet the way God made it. We don't use paper towels or buy water bottles. We have a timer on our hot water heater and we unplug things we aren't using. Thanks for this great giveaway. TRigell at aol dot com

We're a pretty green family, recycle, shop local, switched the light bulbs, etc. etc. One different way we've gotten our kids involved is by giving our 4 y/o an 2 y/o the duty of taking the recycling to the garage and organizing it! They love it and it helps make them a part of it!
Our family has banned drinking bottled water and we recycle and re-use whenever we can.

I stopped using plastic bags and just LOVE the ones I have from reusablebags.com! I no longer drink from any plastic water bottles, choosing to buy several SIGG bottles to have on hand instead. We use only green cleaning products (except the carpet cleaner!!). I've banished regular paper towels in favor of recycled ones - or better yet the good old hand towels! There's more, but I'll stop here :)
