More About Me

I will begin by saying THANK YOU. All of the things that have been going on with my mother were playing in the background of my daily activities and I truly needed to release it. I appreciate the support that you have given me and today is a better day. I appreciate all of your kind words, stories of similar situations and resources that you have provided. I recognize that I am not alone in my experience and when I am ready there will always be willing listeners. For that I am grateful. As I said the other day, I truly believe the blogosphere is The Great Unifier.

Today I have decided to tackle those memes.

MommyPie (love her) tagged me with a 10 Random Things Meme. This meme originally came from Flikrlovr of I'd Blog That and since I commented on her blog that day and she is recovering from surgery and she has a new MAC I am linking back to her. Her rules are as follows:

“Tell us/me/the world 10 interesting/random/quirky/normal/silly things about yourself … things you’re looking forward to, things about you personally, whatever you want.”

1. I played the violin for 10 years from grade school to high-school. I started playing again 10 years later and was the first Black violinist to perform with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra (a community orchestra) in South Africa. Which leads me to Photobucket

2. I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for a little over 2 years. It was an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. (And no I was not in the bush, there is no bush in Johannesburg it is an international city. I had the internet and everything. Really.) Recently I have been able to reconnect with friends from that time via Facebook. Gotta love it.

3. All of my mother’s siblings have one child, I am the oldest and the only girl – can we say SPOILED (but in a good way, I have never been a brat)? Photobucket

4. Recently I took my son out to dinner for the first time. Everyone asked if I was expecting anyone and I told them no, it was just me and my little man. We had a great time, he colored, drank more than he ate and happily went to bed that evening.

5. My favorite hobby is reading (does anyone even use the word hobby anymore?). I started reading in kindergarten after begging my teacher daily to teach me to read. She acquiesced only after my mother called the school and demanded that she teach me. Since the day I met Dick and Jane I have never been the same (this might be dating me but hey what can you do?).

6. I was married in Las Vegas and as cheesy as it may sound it was wonderful. We stayed at a magnificent boutique Penthouse only hotel. It was exquisite. I’m talking a full two story wall of windows overlooking the Vegas strip. Even the shower (which included full body sprays and rainfall shower head) had a full window and seating. We had our own butler, concierge and were driven around in a Maybach. Oh the life of luxury. Wish I could live like that everyday.

7. My favorite color is purple and I never knew it until a friend of mine mentioned it to me. I took a look around at my things and realized that he was right. I have been claiming purple as my favorite color ever since.

8. My two best friends from college live within 35 minutes of me. We have all returned to our college town. Life couldn’t be better.

9. My mother and I vacationed in Anguilla and met a distant cousin for the first time on one of the beaches.
Photobucket

10. I like to play by the rules and don’t like variations. As a child few kids in my neighborhood liked playing board games with me because I would quote the rules.

Now I have to tag some people. Hmm, I am going to my blogroll for this one
Paula's List of Five
A Place of Comfort
Mrs Fussypants Guide to Life (this is a serious reach folks but I would LOVE it if she played along)
Fractured Toy
Momma's Losing It
Maternal Mirth
An Island Life
Ring Leader
Mindless Junk
Southern Fried Momma

Okay, now I am tired. I have another meme but I will do that tomorrow or later today.

Thank you for the tag! I'll do it soon.

My favorite color used to be purple, too. In fact it was my wedding color. Now I'm all into pink!

Oh my. What an interesting life you've led. I sure am glad you explained about Johannesburg. Being such a naive miss priss, I just assumed the bush stories were true.
Why would anyone lie about a bush?

That's quite impressive; your playing with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra. Do you still play? When will you introduce Mekhi to the violin? And lastly, is your son named after someone special or does the name have a meaning? Is the e short or long?
Maybe I should throw a meme at you...

Mines done! I am so ESP that way.

I love that you were married in Vegas! Thanks for sharing. You seem like such an amazing lady and I love that you share your thoughts with us!

Glad my shower curtain tip helped, my house has carpet everywhere and it will never survive two toddlers without plastic down.

I am totally game ... give me until tomorrow. I already have a post scheduled for today.

Plus I am sick as a dog ... a cute dog, though. Prolly a Cocker Spaniel or some sort of terrier.

I don't know what I find more interesting, that you played the violin, or that you lived in Johannesburg, or that you played the violin while living in Johannesburg. Can you still play?

I loved taking my sons to eat when they were little - just me and them. My youngest is 14 now and we still make special times to go to our favorite place alone! I'm glad you got to do that with your little man! Living in Johannesburg must have been incredible! And congratulations for being the first Black violinist to perform with the orchestra there! Amazing!

It was nice reading more about you! You've done some amazing things. My favorite color as a child was purple then it was black when I got older now it's red, but I always say purple and red. :D

So much fun learning about other people. I played the violin in the 4th grade and was terrible. Never practiced.

"And no I was not in the bush ..."

LOL! How cool that you were able to spend two years in another country. (Jealous) And to play in their symphony -- you are quite the accomplished chick!

I love how you tackled this meme -- I know they DO take a lot of energy, so THANKS DOOG!

I am in awe over you being a violin player! I have always wanted to play the violin. I loved stringed instruments and have when the mood hits for classical music, the violin is what captivates me.

Oh, and I've never heard of a Maybach before today!

You're a fantastic, interesting classy lady! Oh, and I strive to write as well as you too!

Johannesburg? Wow! What a great experience. You'll have so many stories to share with your son about your time there.

Getting married in Vegas is actually what I want to do the next time around. If there is a next time. Sure, I have my dream groom picked out, but he doesn't know it. :)

I also love that you took your son out to dinner -- just the two of you. If you can, make it a little tradition. You know, every month or so, have a mom/kid date night. He'll always remember those dinners.

And, since you love to read, check out a book called "In The Way That Elephants Do". Even if it doesn't look like a book you think you want to read, just read it. It'll change you.
