Holiday Shopping!

GIVEAWAY ClOSED - Congratulations to Stroke of Living and Fidget!

I am by no means an early holiday shopper. You'll never catch me in line for Black Friday specials, fighting for markdowns and waking up at the crack of dawn is not my idea of fun. You are more likely to find me doing my shopping online (usually at the last minute) and I have to say I find this stress free. This year is different. I was contacted by Borders and asked if I'd like a $100 giftcard to shop in their new Toy & Games section for my son. Borders is one of my favorite booksellers - I am actually a member of their rewards club and buy many of the books for my family there. So, this was a no brainer for me. I wanted to see what Borders had to offer in their expanded Toy & Game section and I was more than happy with the selection. The toys and games they carry are geared toward learning which is requisite for all the toys I purchase for my son.

When I entered the store I was immediately asked if I needed help by the store manager Jeremiah! I let him know that I was there to pick up my giftcard and shop. He gave me my card and I started shopping. As I was perusing the selection, at two different times I was assisted by very friendly staff members. Overall, I really enjoyed my shopping experience and going in early before the crowds was a bonus (I might stop my procrastinating ways and shop early for the holidays in the future)!

Borders selection includes some of my favorite toy brands including Doug and Melissa which was on sale - buy one get half off. Now that is a bargain! The other toys were buy 2 get one free which helped stretch my dollars even further. Finally, I had to add books/games to the mix and I shopped on the bargain table, buy 3 get 1 free. Here is what I was able to purchase with the $100 giftcard.

Melissa and Doug Basic Skills Board - $19.99
Melissa and Doug toy Stacking Train - $8.49 (50% off price)
Craft Paper Bag Puppets - $12.00
Splash Art - $17.99
Tall Stacker Pegs and Peg Board - $0 (buy 2 get 1 free)
Green Eggs and Ham Sticker Book - $3.99
My Pets Book - 0 (buy 2 get 1 free)
Dinosaurs Carousel Book - $4.99
Lift Flap Animals Book - $2.99
Animal Picture Dictionary 1st Encylopedia - $0 (buy 2 get 1 free)
Dinosaur Book and Blocks - $7.99
Smart Kids Dino IQ - $14.99

total savings: $38.47!

My son is a big fan of dinosaurs so of course several of the books had a dinosaur theme. At the end of the shopping spree I spent $99.00 - yes, I am that good! At my Borders they are doing a community service project, you can buy a bag of coffee for $9.95 and donate it to the troops. As a member of the rewards club I had $5.00 that I could add to my purchase and with that and an additional $5.00 from my pocket I was able to participate in the service project. And on top of all that? I was able to get a free drink from the coffee shop!

I have always admired Borders for their service projects and was happy to participate. If you have a child(ren) to shop for this holiday season, I think you will enjoy the selection at Borders. Need an incentive? Well, Borders provided me with the opportunity to share the wealth with you!

Giveaway

I have two $100.00 Borders Giftcards to give to my readers!

I am so glad to be able to spread some holiday cheer. All you have to do is visit Borders and check out their toy and game selection. Come back and leave a comment telling me a game or toy you played with growing up and why it would be a good choice for kids today.

That is it! Nice and easy- visit Borders and come back here and leave a comment! Good Luck!

This contest is open until Friday, November 27th at 9pm EST. I will contact the winners by email, please be sure to leave an email address if you are not on blogger. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to winner notification. After that I will choose a new winner.

* Disclosure - I received a $100.00 Borders giftcard to conduct this review and giveaway.

They have a Make Your Own Sock Puppet Kit, which I would have loved as a child. I was into crafty, make-it-yourself kits--though all I can remember are those yarn potholder kits. I was an only child, and loved to create pretty things.
I'm old school so I didn't play any of the games that are listed on the site except maybe some of the board games and Lego. I went to a bookstore to find books, not toys. When I played, I went outside and we went outdoors, no matter the weather. I can remember being out when it was freezing, snowing, raining, hailing, you name it. I can't name the number of times I returned home muddy or wet. I remember playing hide and go seek at dusk with all of the neighbourhood children at dusk. It was so much fun.

The games I loved best as a child were Old Maid and Pick Up Sticks. I also loved playing with a kaleidescope as a kid. All of these toys were quite inexpensive...bought at the "dime store". The Old Maid was little kids' poker. You had to learn to "read" the other players so you did not get stuck with the Old Maid card. I learned a lot about human nature with that game...especially my own. Pick Up Sticks required good hand-eye coordination and was not any easier as you got older or more skillful. The kaliedescope taught me that there are many kinds of beauty in the world and perfect symmetry has a special quality all its own. Thanks for the walk down memory lane and for a great giveaway. Happy Holiday.

I believe it would be a good choice for kids to play with nowadays is because it allows for them to express their own creativity, learn about colors, make shapes and be their own little sculptors.
There is power in art for all ages and Play-Doh is able to provide an outlet for one to focus,de-stress and calm down and that is perfect for kids!

The best thing kids can play with is their imagination! I know for me as a kid the most important gift I was given was a love of reading that has stayed with me forever. I remember the different shaped peg games where you tried to leave only one. These were very good for logic and critical thinking.

I still have my American Girl dolls they are great toys for children because they, other than being great quality toys, provide children with some American history, I am a history nerd!

My favorite games as a kid were Sorry, Scrabble and Yahtzee - they are all fun games that have something to teach to children

I used to love to play Ameoba, but I can't find it anymore. Tiles with a wavy line on 2 opposing corners of each tile fill the square inset playing board. Players take turns moving a tile a quarter turn to try to make the ameoba shape that matches a card in their hand. It requires stategy and visualization skills.

More kids should have chemistry sets. I had one and it is what got me interested in a career in science.

I saw that they have a Josephina Mini American Girl doll there! I had a Samantha growing up. It's good to know about a culture that is different from your own.

I played monopoly, scrabble, and out door games such as hopscotch and just playing outside. I remeber when I was little playing outdoors almost everyday and now children don't want to play outside hardly any they would rather play video games.

All of these are much too new for me to have played with them but I did have a diary so the closest thing would be the Pink Diary with Lock. It helps a child to put their feelings into writing.

My sister and I always used to play "beauty shop" I see that Borders has the Magnificent Manicure Kit - we got to review this through Team Mom and it was a lot of fun and very educational too!
I loved Clue and Uno! It seems like no one plays actual board and card games anymore, and I just think that it'd be fun for kids today to play. They provide hours of fun! :)
